Encourage a Young Mind - Shape the Next Generation of Structural Engineers
Structural Engineering Poster for Young Students Available Now
Bird's Nest Poster

SEI and the National Council of Structural Engineers Association (NCSEA) have produced a poster to promote structural engineering as a career among young students. We encourage you to include this exciting poster in your efforts to reach out to students in local schools. This year's "Make Your Mark" poster features the Bird's Nest from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Limited supplies of the poster are available upon request to Suzanne Fisher at sfisher@asce.org. Be sure to include the number of posters you are requesting and where they should be sent. The poster is also available for download.

Design Practices

Craig Wilcox, P.E., S.E., Chair

Purpose: To consider issues related to code implementation and national standards.

Trial Design Problems
SEI trial design problems are investigations into how structural engineers interpret code provisions. The purpose is to evaluate if practicing engineers are able to accurately understand and consistently implement the current code as well as possible future code provisions. The exercises are designed to take about an hour, and all solutions will be anonymous in the publication of results.

2007 Trial Design Problem - Wind Provisions
The results of the 2007 trial design problem indicate that major revisions of the ASCE 7-05 wind provisions are warranted. The simplified wind provisions, now adopted in the 2009 IBC, resulted in increased accuracy, increased consistency and less time to complete as compared with the ASCE 7-05 wind provisions.
