Conversion Guidelines
SEI is encouraging local structural technical groups (STGs) to rename and increase the visibility of their link to SEI by becoming SEI local chapters. By renaming themselves, local groups will have a more visible link to SEI through their use of the Structural Engineering Institute name. The conversion of STGs to SEI local chapters is a simple process involving the following five steps:
- Request permission from the local Chapter or Branch to re-name the structural technical group.
- Request a copy of your bylaws directly from the Section contact. Each STG can locate contact information for their Section by clicking on their respective area on the map that can be accessed by following this link: http://www.asce.org/inside/sec_brnch.cfm.
- Review the Section or Branch bylaws and revise the wording from the Structural Technical Group to "SEI Chapter". The bylaw changes need to be submitted to ASCE for approval. Your zone administrator can assist you with this process. A template for creating the bylaws is available on the SEI website under the Local Activities Division at http://www.seinstitute.org/committees/local.cfm.
- Prepare an agreement between the SEI local chapter and the local Section or Branch. A template for creating the agreement is available on the SEI website under the Local Activities Division at http://www.seinstitute.org/committees/local.cfm. Signatures of the Section or Branch president and the SEI chapter chair are required on the agreement.
- After you have prepared the agreement and bylaws using the available templates and had them signed by the Section or Branch president and the SEI chapter chair, send the completed material to Suzanne Fisher, Manager, Operations, 1801 Alexander Bell Drive, Reston, VA 20191. Jim Rossberg, Director of the Structural Engineering Institute, will review and approve the changes.
Sections or Branches that currently do not have an ASCE Structural Technical Group or SEI local chapter are encouraged to forward the name of a representative to SEI so efforts can be made to assist in starting a local group to serve the needs of Structural Engineers in that geographic area. Templates of bylaws and chapter/branch agreements are available at http://content.seinstitute.org/committees/local.cfm.
