Local Activities Division (LAD)

Purpose:

The Local Activities Division (LAD) shall be responsible for, but not limited to, interacting and providing the technical and professional services of the Institute to the Local Groups. It shall serve as the communications mechanism for Local Groups to express needs and make recommendations to the Board of Governors. The Division shall develop and recommend programs and activities related to improving two-way communication between the Institute and Local Groups.

Becoming an SEI Chapter

SEI encourages local Structural Technical Groups (STGs) to increase their affiliation to SEI by becoming local Chapters of SEI.

SEI wants to ensure that your Section/Branch is adequately served by our Institute. Sections or Branches that do not have a local SEI Chapter are encouraged to gather interested individuals to form one and name a local SEI member to communicate with us about ways we can better serve local needs and strengthen the activities of your Section /Branch.

Some of the benefits of becoming an SEI Chapter include:
• Use of SEI name and branding
• Chapter announcements published on SEI web site and in SEI Update
• One discounted ASCE webinar sponsored by the SEI Endowment Fund
• Funding to attend annual local Chairs meeting to learn about new SEI initiatives, share insights and best practices, etc.
• SEI outreach supplies

To become an SEI Chapter:

1. Request permission from the local Section or Branch to convert the Structural Technical Group as an SEI Chapter.
2. Complete the Sample MOU authorizing creation of an SEI Chapter, and send to SEI of ASCE, 1801 Alexander Bell Drive, Reston, VA 20191 for approval.
3. Bylaws changes will be handled by ASCE.

SEI Local Activities Leadership Conference

Each year local SEI Chapter and Structural Technical Group Chairs are invited to attend the SEI Local Activities Leadership Conference to share insights from their experiences and learn about new initiatives, etc.

The 2011 conference will be held October 28-29 in New Orleans and will include leadership training and a technical tour – details to be announced. SEI sponsors one representative from each local SEI Chapter or STG to attend the meeting. Sponsorship follows standard ASCE travel reimbursement policy which covers airfare (with 14 day advance purchase) plus $100 in daily expenses for each of the two meeting days. If the Chair cannot attend, s/he may nominate a representative from the local SEI Chapter or STG to participate in their place. RSVP to sfisher@asce.org by Thursday, October 6.
