2011 Award winners

The Structural Engineering Institute celebrated its 2011 SEI and ASCE Structural Award winners during the 2011 Structures Congress held in Las Vegas, Nevada. An over-capacity crowd honored achievement in many areas of structural engineering and related disciplines. Click here for more information about the award winners.

 

 

Structural Engineering Institute Awards
Walter P. Moore Jr. Award - This award is given annually in recognition of a structural engineer who has demonstrated technical expertise in, and dedication to, the development of structural codes and standards. Membership in SEI/ASCE is not required. Nominations are due to SEI by November 1 of each year.

Dennis L. Tewksbury Award - The SEI Board of Governors selects the recipient of the Tewksbury award each year in recognition of outstanding service to the Structural Engineering Institute. Nominations are due to SEI by November 1 of each year.

Gene Wilhoite Award
- The Wilhoite Award recipient is chosen from society members in recognition of an individual who has made significant contributions to the advancement of the art and science of transmission line engineering. Nominations in the form of a letter are due to Susan Reid at sreid@asce.org by October 1 of each year

The SEI Technical Activities Division Awards Committee makes recommendations regarding who should receive the Gene Wilhoite award. However, they seek the opinions of the members as to which papers are meritorious. If a reader encounters a paper that s/he believes is outstanding for any reason, please convey this information along with a statement as to why s/he considers the paper exceptional to Susan Reid at sreid@asce.org. Please submit applications and nominations by the deadline listed. Copies will be forwarded to the Chairman of the SEI Technical Activities Division Awards Committee.

ASCE Structural Awards Based on Meritorious Papers
Papers published in the twelve-month period ending with June of the year preceding the year of award are eligible to compete for several ASCE awards and prizes. Those of interest to Structural Engineers are listed below.

Nominations should be submitted no later than the deadline for each award as established in the current ASCE Official Register to Jane Alspach, Senior Manager, Honors and Awards, ASCE, 1801 Alexander Bell Dr., Reston, VA 20191 E-mail: jalspach@asce.org.

ASCE State-of-the-Art of Civil Engineering Award - This award is a society-wide competition for a state-of-the-art paper of exceptional merit. Nominations are due November 1 of each year.

Collingwood Prize - Society-wide competition for papers describing engineering work or recording investigations contributing to engineering knowledge completed by authors 35 years of age or younger. Nominations are due February 1 of each year.

J. James R. Croes Medal - Society-wide competition for a paper of merit as a contribution to engineering science. Papers written jointly by members and non-members are ineligible. Nominations are due November 1 of each year.

T. Y. Lin Award - Society-wide competition for a paper of merit in the field of prestressed concrete. Nominations are due November 1 of each year.

Moisseiff Award - Profession-wide recognition of a paper of merit published in the field of structural design and analysis by ASCE. Nominations are due November 1 of each year.

Alfred Noble Prize - This is a prize available to members of any grade in a joint Engineering Societies' competition for a technical paper of exceptional merit. The author must be 35 years of age or younger. Nominations are due October 1 of each year.

Norman Medal - Society-wide competition for a paper of merit as a contribution to engineering science. Papers written jointly by members and nonmembers are ineligible. Nominations are due November 1 of each year.

Raymond C. Reese Research Prize - Profession-wide recognition of a paper published by ASCE that describes a notable achievement in research related to structural engineering and how it can be used. Nominations are due November 1 of each year.

Arthur M. Wellington Prize - Profession-wide competition for papers related to transportation, foundations, or closely related subjects. Nominations are due November 1 of each year.

ASCE Structural Awards Based on Meritorious Achievements
Jack E. Cermak Medal - Society-wide competition for outstanding contributions in wind engineering. Nominations are due November 1 of each year.

Shortridge Hardesty Award - Society-wide competition to recognize an individual(s) who has contributed substantially in applying fundamental results of research to the solution of practical engineering problems in the field of structural stability. Nominations are due by November 1 of each year.

Ernest E. Howard Award - Society-wide recognition of an individual who has made a definite contribution to the advancement of structural engineering, be it in research, planning, design, or construction. Nominations are due November 1 of each year.

Walter L. Huber Civil Engineering Research Prize - Society-wide competition to recognize notable achievements in research related to civil engineering. Nominations are due October 1 of each year.

Nathan M. Newmark Medal - Society-wide competition to recognize an individual who has substantially strengthened the scientific base of structural engineering through contributions in structural mechanics. Nominations are due November 1 of each year.

George Winter Award - Profession-wide recognition of an active structural engineering researcher, educator or practitioner who has consistently worked to advance the state-of-the-art of the profession through the practical application of design and/or research studies. In addition, candidates must have demonstrated a commitment to the social or artistic needs of the community through work performed in an area not directly related to engineering or science. Nominations are due November 1 of each year.
